The City of Darlington was founded and chartered by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1835. Darlington was built around the courthouse.
Although the origin of the name is uncertain, it is thought to have been designated to honor Colonel Darlington, a revolutionary war hero or to have been named for a town in England.
